eBase from SCETeBase is a simple database program which allows pupils to store, organise and display information. This demonstration version has most of the features of the full version, but you will not be able to print out your work, or export it to a desktop computer.Once installed, eBase becomes an integrated part of NewtonWorks so, to create a new database, make sure you're in NewtonWorks then tap New and select Database from the list of options.A title slip will appear; type in the name of your database here and tap the 'x' button to close it. You can now choose to either create your own database, or use one of the templates supplied. Once you have done this, the Database Setup slip appears. To add fields, type in a name for the field, select a type for it, then tap on Add Field. If you're adding a Keyword field, a new slip will appear into which you should type the list of possible options for this field.Once you've added all the fields that you require, tap on the Done button, and a new database will be created, with a first record containing the fields that you've chosen.Enter data into your record either by typing or writing in the text and numeric fields, or by tapping on the Keyword and Date fields and selecting from the slip which pops up.When you've entered the data for your first record, click on the '+' button to add another, and so on.Once you've created a database, you can then search through it by clicking on the Search button. This allows you to look through specific fields for a particular piece of text, number, date etc, or through all the fields at once. You can also sort your data based on a specific field. Depending on the type of the field, the data can be sorted alphabetically, numerically or chronologically. There are other ways in which you can display your data. To look at your records as a table rather than individual records, tap on the Show button and select Table. To switch back again, tap Show and select Database. You can also view your data as a pie chart or a bar graph; for example, if you have created a database about your classmates, you can see how many of them have blue eyes. To do this, tap Tools and select Bar Chart. Then choose the field that you want to look at. When you tap on Draw Barchart, a graph will be drawn. For further details about the fully functioning version of eBase, contact SCET at :Scottish Council for Educational Technology74 Victoria Crescent RdDowanhillGlasgowG12 9JNTel: 0141 337 5000Fax: 0141 337 5050email: enquiries@scet.org.ukhttp://www.scet.org.uk/
